Highgate bridge

Highgate bridge

On a minor road, 6km north of Newtown and 2km south-west of the village of Bettws Cedewain, Montgomeryshire

Highgate bridge carries the minor road between Tregynon and Newtown over the Highgate Brook, a minor tributary which meets the Bechan Brook, on its way to the River Severn, and is crossed again further downstream by another Penson bridge at Aberbechan. It is a small, rather insignificant bridge with a pair of very modest parapets, not immediately obvious as one speeds along a straight stretch of what was once a turnpike (see photo). The bridge itself, though, immediately announces itself as a Penson creation with its careful stonework and pronounced keystones and string courses. It was built in 1849.
