Llanwnog (Llanwnnog) National School

Llanwnog (Llanwnnog) National School

On the B4568, close to St Gwynog’s (St Gwynnog’s) Church

Attributed to Penson by The Buildings of Wales which dates it 1850, though the date stone appears to show 1852. The school was formally opened in April 1843.

Exterior

A plain, stone building of vaguely Tudor character with a prominent gable to the road. The school house, with dormers, is on the left. There are tall chimneys with corbelled tops. The post card view shows fretted bargeboards, seen also in Penson’s design for the school at Llangurig.

The Building Today

Windows and bargeboards have been altered.

The school house is occupied as a private residence. The school closed in 1962 and the building later served as a community hall. More recently it has been used as a rural centre for children from the West Midlands.
